With the possible exception of the Astros’ Chris Devenski — who leads the majors with 52.2 relief innings but whose effectiveness has diminished as the season has worn on — none of these pitchers are being used in the Goose Gossage mold of the 1970s, when star relievers often threw 100 or more innings in a season. This is particularly true for Jansen, whose workload has always been managed carefully. (He’s on pace for only 68 innings this year.) But if teams are still using pitchers such as Jansen, Rivero and the Indians’ Andrew Miller for only 60 to 80 innings a season, they’re increasingly picking the right innings for them to pitch. By contrast, closers such as the Rockies’ Greg Holland and the Twins’ Brandon Kintzler have rarely made fireman appearances but have often been used to close out big, relatively safe leads. Although they have more saves than pitchers like Jansen and Rivero, Holland and Kintzler have fewer goose eggs and have provided less overall value to their clubs. But Jansen has been considerably more valuable to the Dodgers than those save numbers imply. That’s because Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been deploying Jansen in high-leverage situations that other managers often shield their closers from. Jansen has made 10 multi-inning appearances so far this year. He’s been brought into the game with runners on base nine times. And he’s entered in tied games in eight appearances. l call all of these “firemen appearances” because they resemble how teams used their top relievers in the era a few decades ago when the best relievers were referred to as “firemen” instead of closers. These firemen appearances have not necessarily helped Jansen earn saves; a pitcher can’t earn a save when he enters in a tied game, for instance. But they do provide opportunities for him to earn goose eggs, the new relief-pitcher statistic that we developed this spring. (The short version: A pitcher gets a goose egg for a clutch, scoreless relief inning, including in a tied game.) Jansen has 25 goose eggs, which ties him for third this season. He and his fellow goose-egg leaders — including the Pirates’ Felipe Rivero, who leads MLB with 27 — are routinely making firemen appearances: Brian DuensingCHC300+0.4 Jake PetrickaCHW001+0.0 Deolis GuerraLAA720+0.3 Brandon MorrowLAD010-0.4 Addison Reed2115568 Luke GregersonHOU632-0.2 Mychal GivensBAL1223+1.2 Jonathan BroxtonSTL120-0.6 Jerry BlevinsNYM1246+0.2 Tommy KahnleCHW1171-0.9 Robbie RossBOS100+0.2 Fernando RodneyARI1943+1.4 Luke JacksonATL100+0.1 Ben HellerNYY001+0.0 Sam DysonTEX/SF1271-0.8 Blake ParkerLAA1031+0.4 Erasmo RamirezTB712+0.7 Jandel GustaveHOU010-0.4 Josh SmokerNYM722+0.3 Hunter StricklandSF1130+0.5 Dominic LeoneTOR323-0.3 Drew StorenCIN322-0.3 Derek LawSF1131+0.5 Ernesto FrieriTEX010-0.4 Sergio RomoLAD230-0.8 Cam BedrosianLAA613+0.5 Sam TuivailalaSTL320-0.3 Josh FieldsLAD321-0.3 Greg Hollland1828141 Vidal NunoBAL010-0.4 Ben TaylorBOS101+0.2 Tony CingraniCIN423-0.2 Pedro StropCHC1113+1.2 Daniel StumpfDET212-0.1 Wade LeBlancPIT132-1.0 Bryan MitchellNYY010-0.4 Matt StrahmKC231-0.8 Josh OsichSF224-0.5 Sam FreemanATL502+0.7 Neil RamirezNYM012-0.4 Bruce RondonDET210-0.1 Josh EdginNYM525+0.0 Ryan BuchterSD1252-0.1 Bryan MorrisSF300+0.4 Tommy HunterTB621+0.2 Steven OkertSF637-0.3 Scott ObergCOL613+0.6 J. Jansen has 25 goose eggs on the season, but no broken eggs, our term for when a pitcher enters the game with an opportunity to earn a goose egg but is charged with at least one earned run instead.1Jansen does have one “meh,” which is when a pitcher enters the game in a goose situation but is awarded neither a goose egg nor a broken egg because a run was scored yet not charged to the reliever. The record for most goose eggs in a season without a broken egg is held by Brad Lidge, who had 34 goose eggs and no broken eggs in 2008.As a result of this perfect conversion rate, Jansen leads baseball with 3.6 goose wins above replacement (GWAR) and is on pace for 6.5 GWAR, which would make for one of the top half-dozen relief pitching seasons of all time. Rivero and Miller are second and third in GWAR this season. You can find goose-egg statistics for these and all other relief pitchers in the sortable table below. With the biggest match of the Premier League weekend upon us, Pep Guardiola is aware of how dangerous Tottenham Hotspur will be at Wembley.El Clasico is not the only great match for this very active football weekend in Europe, England will also have Manchester City visiting Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley and Pep Guardiola knows how complicated this game will be for the Citizens. The challenge for the current Premier League champions becomes even more complicated after the victories that Liverpool and Chelsea got on the weekend, both clubs are now above the Citizens at the top of the table and the competition’s top spot is on the line against one of the most competitive sides in the continent.A defeat against Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs would leave City in the fourth position with the same 23 points they already have right now, but a victory would get them back at the top where Liverpool already have 26 points but fewer goals than Pep Guardiola’s side. The Catalan manager is more than ready for the challenge, he knows how much the stakes have been raised after his massive accomplishment from last season and he is aware that the Premier League has become just as difficult as the Champions League for his squad. The fact that Tottenham isn’t playing at White Hart Lane, is something that Pep doesn’t think can affect Pochettino’s squad. It was wonderful at Wembley last season! Same again Monday, please! 🤞 #mancity pic.twitter.com/vo1mhFltlX— Manchester City (@ManCity) October 28, 2018“I think White Hart Lane was different to Wembley. I think Tottenham feel more comfortable at home,” said Guardiola via Four Four Two.“That is going to happen anywhere. We are more comfortable at the Etihad than if we should play in another stadium. In that game I realized that this is the Premier League. I felt … wow.”“I remember in that period people were saying City is going to win the Premier League. In that game I realized [how hard it would be] when I saw how physical they were, how good they are, how high they press, how many good things they do … and this is a team people don’t think or don’t consider to be a contender to win the Premier League. I settled in England in that situation.”“When you play against contenders it’s almost six points. The three points you win and the three points your opponent doesn’t win.”“I don’t know what happened in the last decade of history in the Premier League but it is true that it looks like the strong teams make a lot of points. They don’t drop a lot of points. That’s why the games against contenders become so important.”Report: City are stunned by Norwich George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Manchester City was stunned by Norwich City in todays Premier League clash.Much has been made in recent days of the potential impact of Aymeric…“But nothing is going to change because at the end, Southampton at home is the same points as Tottenham.”📋 Team news 🔎 Key man🆚 Previous meetings 📈 City’s form 💫 Magic moment 🗣️ Pep’s preview Your definitive guide to tomorrow’s match against Man City👇— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) October 28, 2018Depending on how well Manchester City does in this crucial match against Spurs, we’ll be able to predict a proper forecast for the next month of competition that the Citizens will have to endure before the big Manchester Derby day arrives on 11 November. After playing at Wembley this Monday, Guardiola’s side will have a little bit of a breath with four consecutive matches at home that they will need to take advantage of.The Citizens play Fulham in the Carabao Cup next week, then Southampton in the Premier League three days later, then Shakhtar in the Champions League three days later, and Manchester United at Etihad Stadium before the final international break of 2018 catches all of us.That is five matches in 14 days, starting with this Monday’s challenge against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.Pep on whether the Wembley pitch will play a role in his team selection on Monday night… 💬Presented by @marathonbet 🔵 #mancity pic.twitter.com/Vm4GFJ6fLu— Manchester City (@ManCity) October 26, 2018What result do you expect from this match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City at Wembley? Edinson Cavani hopes coach Thomas Tuchel can work out an effective system to bring out the full potential of his strike partnership with Neymar and Kylian MbappeParis Saint-Germain have got off to a record-breaking start in Ligue 1 this season after winning all 13 of their opening games.Cavani, Neymar and Mbappe have formed a devasting strike partnership with 45 league goals already scored this season. But, in an interview with France great Christophe Dugarry on Radio Montecarlo, Cavani revealed that Tuchel can still extract more from his star forwards.“We have three players whose quality makes them important [to the team], and it’s normal for us all to want to score,” said Cavani, as quoted by AS.“The role of the coach is to gel his players, both in attack and in defence.
